In de 18e eeuw kende Maastricht verschillende verzamelaars van
fossielen, verzameld in de grotten van de St. Pietersberg en elders in Zuid-Limburg.
Een van hen was de kolonel Bosc de la Calmette. Zijn collectie is
beschreven in een veilingcatalogus van maart 1778:
